Why procrastination could be a good thing

The time of resolutions and the final overcoming of our bad habits is once again on the doorstep. And like every year, it will be like every year. You know that, don’t you? All good resolutions once again delayed until St. Nimmerleins day. “Next time”, “Next time”, “If it fits better” and “Not so bad …” I hear you say already now. And the things that would do us such good (or not, editor’s note) are not happening again. Some call this the “inner piggy”. I am not a big friend of self-insults. For a simple reason. We can also use “delay” to our advantage.

What procrastination can do for us

What brings us delay? Delay helps us not to do something that we find exhausting now. I know that from my long running trainings. Especially from those I plan to do early in the morning. “How often can I turn around in bed, how long can I sleep? Does running have to be now? Wouldn’t tomorrow be enough?” and so on. Delay helps me to avoid the pain of running. At least I suppose that this training could be a bit painful again. Sometimes it’s true, not always. But if something else sounds more tempting, I like to generalize and think it always hurts.

So if I want to, I am a master at delaying – delaying negative and unpleasant feelings.

I now use this good quality of myself to delay other negative feelings, such as anger, rage, sadness, anxiety, guilt.

What? How’s that gonna work?

Let’s make an example: You are looking forward to the next party and have already arranged everything. Suddenly the mobile phone rings. A friendly voice tells you that unfortunately your reservation cannot be kept in your favourite restaurant and that they cannot offer you an alternative. Your normal reaction: trouble! Then anger. Then despair! So in one word: STRESS.

Stress – that’s exactly what you want to avoid, so best delay – now! Because it harms you now to make a good decision.

Remember how delay works. That’s exactly how you do it now.

  1. You go back to the state you were in just before the phone rang.
  2. You remember how well you can be.
  3. You think about what you could do if, in our example, your reservation could not be kept and pain could occur.
  4. You know you have time to find a good solution.

It may sound a little strange at first. Because you are not used to it yet. Try it a few times and you will see that you can delay any feelings for any time – to your advantage.

Yes, it’s working!

The advantage is obvious: If you have practiced and mastered this technique, you will master your life. Imagine that you can determine how you feel at any time! Remember a time when you knew that you could achieve everything you wanted. What a great feeling.
